Senate and House leaders are close to an agreement that could lead to spending nearly $150 million to expand treatment and
supervision programs for convicts.
IN-PRISON THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES
Drug- and alcohol-treatment programs inside regular prisons.
Now: 3,250 beds
Proposed*: 5,000 beds
SUBSTANCE-ABUSE FELONY PUNISHMENT FACILITIES
Drug and alcohol program for probationers and parolees in special treatment prisons.
Now: 500 beds
Proposed*: 2,000 beds
TRANSITIONAL TREATMENT CENTERS
Privately run centers that provide counseling to help prisoners re-enter society after they are released.
Now: 600 beds
Proposed*: 2,000 beds
INTERMEDIATE SANCTION FACILITIES
Lockups to punish probation and parole violators in lieu of sending them back to prison.
Now: 2,200 beds
Proposed*: 4,000 beds.
HALFWAY HOUSES
Community-based centers that house newly released convicts as they look for work and a place to live in the community.
Now: 600 beds
Proposed*: 1,500 beds
